What Is the Copper Coast?
The Copper Coast is a UNESCO Global Geopark spanning 25 kilometers along the County Waterford coastline in southeast Ireland. The name comes from the copper mining history of the area; mines that operated here from the 17th century onward have left geological markers visible in the cliff faces today.
What makes it a Geopark isn’t just the mining history, though. The coastline itself is geologically significant, with dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, and rock formations that tell the story of Ireland’s landscape. For visitors—especially those looking to elope—it means you’re choosing a location with real character and depth, not just pretty views.
The Copper Coast sits about 2 hours’ drive from both Dublin and Cork, making it super accessible without feeling touristy or overcrowded.
Why Couples Choose the Copper Coast for Their Elopement
The Copper Coast works for Ireland elopements for several reasons that go beyond aesthetics.
- Drama and variety.
The coastline isn’t monotonous. You have cliff-backed beaches, rocky coves, golden sand, and dramatic rock formations. This means your photos have genuine variety without moving locations constantly. One of the region’s most beautiful beaches (that I’m keeping a secret unless you’re one of my clients) offers the kind of towering cliffs and isolated feel that make elopement days feel truly removed from the everyday.
- Quiet.
Unlike some of Ireland’s more famous coastal areas, the Copper Coast doesn’t get overrun with tourists, even in summer. You won’t have crowds photo-bombing your ceremony or dozens of other visitors in your shots. It’s possible to feel genuinely alone here, which is exactly what most couples want for an elopement.
- Light and photography.
The Copper Coast faces south and just a little bit west, which means exceptional light from late morning onward. In spring and autumn especially, the light has depth and colour that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. The sun sets late in Irish spring and summer, so even evening ceremonies have good light for photos.
- Accessibility.
You can get here easily from major cities, but the location itself doesn’t require technical hiking or expensive permits. Leave No Trace principles apply—which I discuss with all my clients—but there are no bureaucratic barriers to elopement photography here.
Where to Stay on the Copper Coast
The region has three main towns, each with different vibes and accommodation options.
- Waterford is the largest city in the area, about 30 minutes from the coast. It has the widest range of hotels, restaurants, and services. Waterford Castle is a standout option if you want something with real character, an actual castle on its own island. You can even get married there, if you’re so inclined.
- Dungarvan is smaller and sits closer to the coast, about 15-20 minutes from the main beaches. It’s got genuine character as a working Irish town, with good restaurants and pubs, without feeling manufactured for tourists. This is where I typically recommend couples stay if they want to be closer to the Copper Coast itself while still having access to shops and dining.
- Tramore sits between the two and has a seaside-town feel, with a beach and promenade. It’s a good middle ground if you want coastal proximity without going quite as small as Dungarvan.
Beyond these, there are boutique options scattered around—cabins, farmstays, and small hotels. Mount Congreve Gardens, for instance, has beautiful eco cabins and the most stunning gate lodges on the grounds if you’re looking for something more immersive and unique.
Things to Do: Your Elopement Adventure
This breaks into two categories: things that work for your actual elopement day, and things that make your trip to the Copper Coast in Ireland memorable.
For your elopement day:
- The beaches and coastal spots themselves are the main event, but having variety keeps the day interesting. Beyond the dramatic cliff-backed beaches, there are quieter sandy coves, woodland paths leading down to smaller beaches, and rocky outcrops that photograph differently depending on light and angle. There’s also a beautiful forest nearby. I recommend a personalised list of options to each of my clients, depending on the vibes they’re after: some want wild and exposed, others want more intimate and sheltered.
- Copper Coast Mini Farm is a sweet option if you want something completely different from typical elopement activities, especially in the spring. You can spend time with baby goats and feed the animals! It breaks up the day and gives you something to do.
- Horse riding is also fun! Gives you a whole new perspective on the landscape, and makes for both an enjoyable afternoon and some great photos.
For your wider trip:
- Dungarvan is super cute. Walk the waterfront, grab dinner at one of the local spots, explore the shops. Dungarvan Castle is worth a visit if you want something photogenic and historical without the tourist infrastructure of bigger attractions.
- The broader Waterford region has traditional villages, good food spots, and smaller attractions like craft studios and heritage sites. If you’re bringing guests or spending a few days, there’s enough to keep people occupied without feeling like you’re doing a generic Ireland tour.
- There are other beaches nearby that offer different scenery from the main Copper Coast formations if you want to explore beyond your elopement day.
The principle I work with for all of this: your elopement day is about you and what you want to experience. The rest of your time in the region is about the adventure and the memory of being somewhere beautiful. Both matter.
Best Time to Visit the Copper Coast
Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are my top recommendations.
- Spring means fresh light, fewer crowds, and more reliable (if not always sunny) weather. The landscape is green, and the days are long enough that you get good light well into the evening. Unpredictability is the trade-off; you might get rain, so flexibility helps.
- Autumn has similar advantages: gorgeous light, fewer tourists, and beautiful colours in the landscape. September especially has more stable weather than spring, though it’s never guaranteed.
- Summer is beautiful, no question. The weather is more reliable, and the landscape is lush. The downside is that it gets busier. Not Disneyland-level busy, but noticeably more people. There can be harsh light in the middle of the day, with the sun so high in the sky. The sun also sets quite late, which sounds good until you realize it means the light you want for photos might not arrive until almost 10 PM. We always work with the light rather than against it.
- Winter can be stunning in terms of drama—complex skies, moody light—but the weather is genuinely unpredictable. And cold. Blustery winds are common, and there’s always a good chance for rain. Some couples are into it, and if you like it I love it. Moody weather makes for some fun photos.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is the Copper Coast from Dublin and Cork?
The Copper Coast is about a two-hour drive from both Dublin and Cork. Either way, it’s accessible from major airports without being a huge journey.
What’s the best time of year to elope on the Copper Coast?
- Spring and autumn are ideal. You get reliable light, fewer crowds, and stable enough weather to plan confidently.
- Summer works too, but expect busier conditions and later sunsets.
- Winter can be beautiful but weather-dependent.
Is the Copper Coast good for photography?
Yes. The variety of landscape—cliffs, beaches, rocky formations—means genuinely interesting backdrops. The light, especially in spring and autumn, is exceptional. If photography matters to you (and if you’re eloping, it probably does), the Copper Coast delivers.
What should we do if the weather is bad on our elopement day?
Ireland’s weather is changeable, and she’s moody. This is where having a planner who knows the region helps—I have backup locations, timing strategies, and realistic contingency plans. Worst case, we reschedule by a day or two if needed. I’ve always got some deliberate wiggle room in the calendar.
How long should we spend on the Copper Coast?
For just the elopement day, a full day is standard. For a proper trip, I typically recommend 3-4 days in the region so you can explore, settle in, and not feel rushed.
Do I need a planner for a Copper Coast elopement?
Technically, no. The Copper Coast is accessible, there are no permits required, and you can sort it all out yourself. But here’s what changes when you work with a planner: I know the light patterns, the backup locations, which beaches work for which weather, the hidden spots that aren’t in guidebooks, and the vendors who actually understand what an elopement needs (not a traditional wedding infrastructure). I also manage the logistics so you’re not coordinating details while you’re supposed to be enjoying your trip.
For American couples especially, having someone who knows the region intimately removes a lot of stress and uncertainty. You don’t know what you don’t know, right? I’m there with you every step. Check out the whole experience here.
Can we bring guests to a Copper Coast elopement?
Yes! Some couples do. If you’re bringing people, we plan accordingly—there are spots that work well for small groups, and we think through logistics differently than we would for just the two of you.
What’s the closest accommodation to the Copper Coast?
Dungarvan is closest, 15-20 minutes to the main beaches. It also has that “cute Irish town” vibe. Waterford is 30-40 minutes away and has more accommodation options.
Ready to Plan Your Copper Coast Elopement?
The Copper Coast is genuinely one of the best places to elope in Ireland. The landscape is dramatic, the light is exceptional, and the region has enough character that your trip feels like an adventure, not just a logistics exercise.
If you’re thinking about eloping here, get in touch! I handle everything from location scouting and timing to vendor recommendations and day-of logistics. It’s all taken care of (:
