You can’t really go wrong with a San Luis Obispo engagement session, can you? 

The central coast is one of my absolute favourite places in California. It’s definitely one of the places I miss the most. Something about that rocky, jagged coastline makes me happy, so I jumped at the opportunity to take a trip down for a San Luis Obispo engagement session.

I met Jess and Drake through a friend of mine, Joni. We all spent a lovely evening together running around on the coast, from the water’s edge to the bluffs up above the beach. Jess and Drake are both charming human beings. She’s from Sweden, he’s from England, and they’re both almost illegally adorable together. 

I mean, come on, Jess posts Instagram captions like: “JUST GET IN HERE AND KISS ME LIKE IT’S OUR 85TH MONTHIVERSARY (cause it is).”

Of all the random happenstance (happenstances?) that brought us together, I’m glad that we found each other. Jess and Drake live life out loud. They’re always out and about, they spend far more time out of the house than I do, and they love each other so hard.

And that’s really all it comes down to, isn’t it? 

If I had a dollar for every time a couple told me that they were awkward in front of the camera, I’d be a very wealthy woman. And I understand; I’m awkward in front of the camera too. But if you give yourself permission to sink into your partner and forget about what else is going on, if you give yourself permission to be who you are together, I promise you, there’s nothing awkward about it. 

Part of my job is making people look good, but if I’m being honest, a lot of that has nothing to do with the camera. I don’t contort people into strange poses like those high school photos we had to take back in the day (please tell me I’m not the only one who had to turn my chin 7 degrees to the left, whatever that means). I talk to them. They talk to each other. And then…some magic like this San Luis Obispo engagement session happens.
